Presentation and discussion with various Red Hook community-based organizations on the programs and services they provide to our local community.
Maria – Solid change starts with empowering the youth. • No high school in the neighborhood • No train station nearby – kids travel two hours to get to school • 55% don’t graduate • 60% unemployment • Health screenings • Jobs to the Red Hook community
What should be here that’s not here? Wants the Red Hook Initiative to expand and collaborate with other local groups.
Jessica – Red Hook Community Justice Center. Visitors globally to replicate what they do. • Lack of high schools near here leads to drop outs and hurts school program participation • Three elementary schools – Charter schools are trying to create another K-5 school out of self-interest newcomers.
Red Hook Initiative goals: • Serve 19-24 year olds with comprehensive services. • IKEA and Fairway donate food and furniture but have not invested in the community.
Local hiring – who’s responsible for oversight? • Even those hired – there were no extra job training and support for single mothers. • No tracking of who remains. • No ongoing local hiring • No investment in community • Not even a board for community posting • Discretionary funding from elected
Internship:
CB6 tries to do outreach to secure internships especially paid ones.
1. Lack of neighborhood local school 2. Local hiring follow-up 3. Investment in community
Talk to electeds and then ask entities to come see what they deliver on. What was expected?
