Presentation and discussion with representatives for the Commission on Public’s Health System on a proposal to provide opportunities for community involvement in designing an improved, and more responsive health care delivery system.

Representative’s Anthony Feliciano and Michael Schweinsburg from the Commission on Public’s Health System and Karen Jarrett from NYSNA made a presentation to the committee.  City health advocacy organization  Working on stopping hospital closings  Engaging communities, especially low income  Home rule on health care resources. State jurisdiction to more local decision making  Looking at alternatives and subsequent development of those sites  Use land use “power” to monitor changes  Hospital mergers haven’t benefited communities  Want to create Borough Health Committees

Goal is to amend City Charter to do community needs assessments.

Currently hospitals file documents with the state when planning to close. The state doesn’t necessarily engage communities. Hospital closure wouldn’t be stopped but could affect land use decisions. Coalition includes labor and community groups and individuals.

A motion to oppose the proposal was made by Daniel Ramos and seconded by Marguerite Scott.
