Welcome Back- The Community Board Never Sleeps

Welcome Back!
The Community Board Never Sleeps!
In most instances the summer is a time when we, and other Community Boards, are on a “hiatus''. However, here at CB6 our L and Use & Landmark Committee , Permits & License Committee and Economic Waterfront Community Development and Housing Committee (EWCDH) remained in session.
The permits and Licensing Committee met to approve liquor licenses ,while the Landmarks/Land Use Committee met to evaluate Certificates of Appropriateness and applications to the Board of Standard and Appeals . The EWCDH Committee met with budget directors from Councilman Lander and Councilman Levin’s offices in order to be best prepared to advocate for our community in the city budget as we prepare to submit our district needs assessment in the fall.
Check out last years District Needs Assessment here.
After these committees met the, their recommendations were then ratified by our executive committee and sent on to the appropriate agency’s such as the the State Liquor Authority and Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Over the summer CB6 also followed through on projects such as the Innis Playground and the 9th Street redesign .
As our new(ish) District Manager, Mike Racioppo has made a point of mentioning(in his District Manager report/ while attending various meetings) he is excited to be working with, and for the community, and if you’d like to connect with him, feel free to send him an email .
Now, as the leaves start to change, the semi-hiatus is over and we are back to regular order!

BKCB-6 Facebooking , tweeting and Instagramming just for you!
We use Social Media to highlight the boards work, openings and exciting activities throughout the community; but in addition we use it as a resource for Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Columbia Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope & Red Hook, offering helpful updates and information as seen in the tweet above letting folks know about the weeks paving and milling schedule.

Chair's Report
Dear Fellow BKCB-6ers,
On September 18th the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to designate the former Hans S. Christian Memorial Kindergarten at 236 President Street, and the adjacent red-brick at 238 President Street as landmark sites .
We were very pleased to learn this news, as the protection of a valuable piece of our community’s fabric is extremely important to us. You may recall that earlier this year, upon hearing about the potential demolition of these important, and historic, buildings, we immediately sent a letter asking the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) and the Department of Buildings to look into this matter . LPC calendared the properties for land marking consideration and our board voted, unanimously, to support landmark designation.
As cited by various reports and noted in the board's resolution this location was important in the social reform movements of the 20th century and, thanks to hard work from members of our community, our elected officials, and many others we have preserved a tangible reminder of that great history.
Also, we are restarting tradition of giving out the CB6 Youth Acknowledgement Awards and the Robert Acito Award for Youth Involvement.
Youth Acknowledgement Awards will be given to youth between the ages of 10 to 19 who reside, attend school or volunteer for some organization serving the CB6 district. The contribution must have occurred in 2018 and may include, but is not limited to, tutoring, participating in community-based projects, assisting the needy, or triumphing over a personal challenge. Only volunteers will be considered eligible for this award.
The Robert Acito Award for Youth Involvement will be given to an adult member of the CB6 community who has demonstrated a commitment to young people and has proven to be a positive force in their lives. Robert Acito served as District Manager from 1980-1993 and in his lifetime worked tirelessly on behalf of the youth of the district. Since his passing, the Community Board has chosen to honor Bob’s memory by selecting an adult member of the community who has demonstrated a similar sense of purpose.
Nomination forms can be found below :

Lastly, we are looking for public members for the following committees Parks & Recreation , Permits & Licences , Youth Human Services and Education , Economic/ Waterfront Community Development and Housing ,
If you are interested in serving on any of these committees please apply here .
Landmarks

Over the summer, Brooklyn Community Board 6 also reviewed and commented on two applications for Certificates of Appropriateness(a/k/a C of A) . Both applications were with respect to properties in the Park Slope Historic District .
An application at 513 11th Street was approved with respect to the front of the building, however it was disapproved with regard to the rear extension, and sunken backyard as inconsistent with the context and integrity of the historic district while the application for a penthouse rooftop addition was conditionally approved with reduced glazing.
The application with for 535 1st Street , was disapproved. as the extension is too large and out of character with the historic district, the glazing on the sides of the extension is overwhelming and inconsistent with glazing pattern of other extensions, and since no buildings on the block maintain historic balustrades restoration of a historic balustrade is no longer in context.
