I hope this email finds you well after last night’s meeting, which capped off another decade of general board meetings.

I hope this email finds you well after last night’s meeting, which capped off another decade of general board meetings.

It was a quick meeting, but we had a wide range of things happening, including hearing from the community, votes on items from 3 of our committees, and reports from representatives of our elected officials.

During “Community Session,” we were informed on two opportunities and one opinion. The first was the 2020 Census and related job opportunities , second was about the Citizens Committee for NYC Grants , and finally, there was a criticism of the City’s plan for Public Place . The offer to send us your questions and/or let us know what you think about Public Place still stands, so email , and we’ll bring it to the attention of the appropriate parties.

Our first vote was on approval of a recommendation from our Environmental Protection Committee, presented by the committee’s Co-Chair Hildegaard Link. We are joining a panoply of organizations by submitting a letter in support of efforts demanding that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) not weaken water classification standards and to reclassify the water quality standard of the canal to more accurately reflect its current and future uses. Please note that we have a history of support for the canal’s reclassification to a higher standard as we also unanimously voiced our support as recently as May 2012 .

Our Permits and Licensing Committee was next on the docket with applications for 3 liquor licenses and 1 sidewalk café. Glenn Kelly, filling in for Committee Chair Rachel Freeman, presented, and all were overwhelmingly approved .

The final voting portion of the meeting was a recommendation from our Transportation Committee to support Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez’s Helicopter Safety Act , which would restrict non-essential helicopter flights across NYC. The board voted unanimously in support!

The meeting closed out with reps from the offices of Borough President Adams , Councilmember Lander , State Senator Montgomery , State Senator Myrie , Assemblymember Simon , Congresswoman Clarke , and Congresswoman Velasquez .



During new business, it was announced that the Friends of Carroll Park are holding their annual food drive on Saturdays throughout December.

While this wasn’t discussed during the meeting, the former Degraw Street Firehouse will no longer be vacant as it will become the home of Noel Pointer Foundation , which will operate a youth music education center.
