Sadly, I begin with the news of a loss for our CB6 and Red Hook communities as Carolyn Broughton, the sister of CB6 member and Secretary Karen Broughton, has lost her life to the COVID-19 virus. As Assemblymember Felix Ortiz noted, the Broughton family’s dedication to our community has spanned generations. We, as a community, and indeed as a Community Board, were fortunate to have had Karen and Carolyn's mother, Emma as a board member for many years. We have been helped by their dedication and offer our deepest condolences and sympathy. May Carolyn’s memory be a blessing to all those who knew her. This also serves as a reminder of how serious, and close to home, this ongoing crisis is.

The ongoing crisis is why the “ PAUSE ” has been extended through May 28th for those of us here in New York City, while some regions of the state “reopen.” The only way, until there is an effective and available vaccine , to get through this and be able to return to a semblance of normal is by continuing to keep our distance and covering our faces. This will save lives, and it’s not “ emasculating ” or other such nonsense.

There has been significant support but also a great deal of opposition, from every perspective to the city’s new open street plans. I repeat that we want to have input on this and hope DOT allows that to happen. Either way, no matter what your thoughts on the program are, I’d recommend letting DOT know and if you’d like copying me on the email. I will also continue to share any comments directly with the appropriate agencies. 

Agencies, including DOT, have a good track record of being part of our community check-ins, and for that, among other reasons, we’re having another one at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, June 17th, via zoom. You can register for it here and now. I’d like to again thank the close to 400 attendees we’ve had at our first 2 “ Check-ins .”Not only is it great to see such civic enthusiasm but, especially when submitting questions in advance, it allows the meetings to be focused on sharing information based around our community’s concerns.
