I’ll start with news of the building collapse at 348 Court Street, best known as the location of Body Elite Gym. I’ve been in contact with Councilmember Lander, Inspector O’Malley, and the Office of Emergency Management on the matter.

I’ll start with news of the building collapse at 348 Court Street, best known as the location of Body Elite Gym. I’ve been in contact with Councilmember Lander, Inspector O’Malley, and the Office of Emergency Management on the matter. The cause is still being investigated, but thankfully nobody, as of yet, has been injured or displaced. This collapsed building had been issued a stop-work order three weeks ago. As I receive more information, I’ll be sure to share it with you and please note the road closures happening in the area.

Speaking of information to share, next Monday, July 6th, begins “ Phase 3 ” of our reopening. Unlike Phase 2, where a lot of businesses returned, the only category set to return under Phase 3 is personal care. Unfortunately, due to the resurgence of COVID-19 across the country, attributed in large part to indoor dining, indoor dining has been indefinitely delayed. Phase 3 will also see a host of recreational activities such as basketball and tennis being permitted once again. But no matter what you do, please keep your distance and cover your face as the COVID-19 crisis is very much still happening no matter how much some of us want to wish it away.

Sadly, we have a reminder of just how current this crisis  is, as we lost former Assemblymember Joe Ferris to COVID-19 just over a week ago. I didn’t know him, but many people I know and respect always spoke of him as a significant force for good in the government. Among those paying tribute are his  Assembly successors Jim Brennan and now, Robert Carroll, as well as great reformers in neighboring districts such as Mike Pesce, Jo Anne Simon, and my old boss Joan Millman. We offer the most profound condolences to the Ferris family.
