Independence Day Weekend

We at Brooklyn Community Board 6 wish you all the best as we head into Independence Day weekend.

These are tough times across our nation, but we've faced troubled times before, and we overcame them. We created an aspirational nation that kept hope alive during a civil war and beat back tyranny in two world wars. We persevered through pandemic and depression. We are again called upon in the name of justice and freedom to be our best selves even as we struggle through the ravages of disease and economic collapse. We must show the fortitude to move forward as a country and in our community, and we have no doubt we will.

So enjoy this holiday weekend at a safe distance, and while you may disagree with what someone says or believes, not only do they have the right to do it, criticism of a system should not be confused for hate or disrespect. It's why James Baldwin said , when asked about his criticism of this country, born out of a declaration 244 years ago , 'I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually".
