One distinctive aspect of weekends nowadays is the open streets & open restaurants program that has encouraged responsible social interaction and helped businesses that had been closed for months. Parts of Park Slope and Red Hook are seeing the benefits now. Companies can find out more details and apply here.

This program not only helps now, but our post-pandemic city will be shaped by what we do while in its midst. The businesses we support, the transportation options we choose are all actions that will have a lasting impact. We can't assume our local shops will be there when we get back to “normal" if we rely exclusively on Amazon Prime now.

So, as various businesses and cultural institutions we’ve missed start to open, don’t just give thanks give them your patronage. We can also urge lawmakers at the state and federal levels, especially, to enact policies that help them stay viable.

Speaking of lawmakers, one of the best there was, a personal friend, mentor, and employer of mine, former Assemblymember Joan Millman , as many of may know, had decided not to run for re-election as female district leader for the 52nd assembly district. Following Joan in anything is a tough act, but in the Assembly, Jo Anne Simon has done a great job. So with that, I’d like to give a big congratulations to Jesse Pierce, who has been elected to succeed Joan . I'm confident she will do a great job, and I look forward to her making Brooklyn a greater democracy.
