New Yorkers' dedication to following safety protocols has overcome health experts who thought our numbers would be rising again . Instead we steadily remain just below a 1% infection rate. Of course, we have to keep in mind that it’s not 1% everywhere, and it’s much higher in communities neighboring CB6, such as Sunset Park.

We can’t just be dedicated to safety for ourselves, but we have to ensure that everyone we share our city with is safe, and we should adopt policies reflecting that. I’ll make the point again that our prior statements on schools, and the eventual return to school buildings, wasn’t posturing or shouting at the wind. Wanting schools open doesn’t mean that safety can be ignored for the most vulnerable. Safety must be ensured FOR EVERYONE.

As of now, especially as schools that tried to open are returning to all remote,  it doesn’t seem like the physical plant of schools and degree of preparation can be overcome by even the most well intentioned attempts at distancing. Having closed too slowly is not an argument for opening too quickly.
