Dedicated readers of this newsletter will take note of 2 consistent themes of late. One is the dedication of New Yorkers in following COVID-19 safety protocols, and the other is concern about the reopening of school buildings this September.

Regarding the former, the city reported its lowest positive test percentage (0.24%) since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Let's not forget that while that is a great number, it doesn't speak for all communities and keeping it that low, and lower, requires that we don't let up on safety.

One mistake would be to ignore the calls of our School District 15 principals, teachers, and families that have made clear that schools should not reopen in September. They together with the UFT have asked for a delay and phase-in of in-person learning this fall. For that reason, we have sent a letter to the Mayor and Chancellor supporting The delay in in-person instruction until adequate plans have been made and implemented for safety.
