It's been great to engage in clarifying conversations with people who have responded so thoughtfully and passionately with varying perspectives regarding school building and in-person learning. This past week I have been raising the issue of Sunset Park school building reopening's and in-person learning in light of its high COVID-19 positive testing rate (7%) compared to the city average of below 1%.

I have been asked why this focus since it's outside of CB6? While we may be a city of islands (except for the Bronx), no community in our city is an island unto itself, and anyway, Sunset Park is part of the same school district. It does not exist in isolation.

Children travel within the school district (especially middle schoolers) and throughout the city (especially high schoolers). Plus, this is a significant equity issue, and we don't want the already profound impact of COVID-19 to increase inequity in education when it can be prevented.
