As always, some interesting stuff is happening across our district. Including the final night of “Dine in Park Slope,” art walks in Gowanus and Red Hook, bluegrass on the canal, or a BBQ celebrating the Census with our friends at Red Hook Initiative. 

Speaking of the census, if you haven’t done so already or missed Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon & CB6 member Jason Reischel at Whole Foods, take 10 minutes, click here and fill it out. It will help our community, borough, and city receive the federal funding and representation it deserves. As shown during our current crisis, such funding is necessary to help avoid mass layoffs, government services such as trains and buses. 

Obviously I have a bias towards helping New York, but it’s not in New York’s interest; it’s in the countries. Take, for example, that New York City’s population is less than 3% percent of the country, less than 1% of its landmass. At the same time, NYC produces nearly 10% of it’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP) while receiving billions less from the federal government than it pays out through taxes. We are fortunate that our federal reps are fighting and already voted to make this happen, but making that funding appear, requires the other branches of the legislative to process to take action. 

While that may not be in the city’s control, one thing that the city does control is how, and when, our public schools reopen. Just like earlier in the week, it seems like unless a noted fitness enthusiast from Park Slope changes course or a thousand schools that had ventilation problems as of yesterday are instantly safe, we’re headed for a school strike. As I’ve said I’ll share it immediately if I get any more information on this.
