Despite the rain, there was a good turnout at last night’s Gowanus Task Force meeting. In the hours since, “good” is a word you hear less and less with record rain and flooding across the community and city.

Despite the rain, there was a good turnout at last night’s Gowanus Task Force meeting. In the hours since, “good” is a word you hear less and less with record rain and flooding across the community and city. The Governor and Mayor have issued emergency orders that’ll remain in place for at least the next few days. 

As I write this, it’s not raining, but it’ll likely start again. All forms of transportation are severely delayed and disrupted; it’s best to stay home, avoid dealing with those delays, and allow more space for emergency operations to get around. Also, Alternate Side Parking, to the extent that it exists on weekends, will be suspended through Sunday. 

We won’t know the full impact of this weather for some time, but we can get there quicker and assist those who need it sooner if those with damaged property report it at reportdamage.nyc.gov. Also, the 5th Avenue Bid compiled resources found at bit.ly/5Avebid929 for businesses seeking assistance. 

Things are still scheduled for the weekend, including the Van Alen Block Party and the Atlantic Antic. 

Past the weekend, universal composting starts on Monday, DEC hosts a Brownfield meeting on Tuesday, and we’re having a Landmarks meeting on Thursday. The agenda consists of 1 item: an application to allow for one of over one window at 229 Baltic Street. Unless withdrawn or tabled, that application will move to our full board on Wednesday, October 11th, at 6:30 p.m. at Van Alen.
