Hopefully, you’re doing well as we head into the weekend following our final full board meeting in 2023. 

While the meeting was the last of the year, it was certainly not the least. Seven items were on the agenda, and there was a big turnout for stuff not even on it, such as an asylee shelter planned for 130 3rd Street. We made clear, disappointing those who opposed this shelter location, including, unfortunately, some who resorted to repulsive and racist rhetoric, that our community must contribute its fair share to ensure that those who claim refuge are sheltered during the process. Regarding the scheduled agenda, we approved plans for two liquor licenses, two landmark applications, plans for Boerum Park, and a ULURP application for 41 Richards Street, increasing modern industrial capacity. We also conditionally disapproved a ULURP application for 341 10th Street. What that translates to is that we approve of the plans presented, which would build hundreds of deeply affordable family and senior housing units, but due to community concerns that we as a board shared about the history of the developer, we insist that this rezoning be tethered to an ironclad Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). A CBA that protects the interest of current tenants and ensures the number of, and the permanent affordability of, new units covered by HPD programs and existing units. I look forward to continuing to work with the tenants (who’ve been incredibly helpful and welcoming) and the City Council to ensure that such a CBA becomes a reality.
