District Manager’s Notes
Civic Inspiration, Guilt & More
The Knicks championship parade fills the Canyon of Heroes, early voting lags last year’s pace, and a standing gripe about Madison Square Garden’s tax exemption.
Unless you’re the GOAT of ignoring and avoiding the sights and sounds around you while somehow still reading Community Board emails, you’re aware the New York Knicks are NBA Champions. It’s also likely you’re aware that a ticker-tape parade is taking place today, Thursday, June 18. It gets underway around 10 a.m., and my understanding is that if you want a chance to see the champs, you should’ve already arrived somewhere along the Canyon of Heroes. (Update: I had to reschedule and edit this email as the viewing areas are already full and nobody else will be allowed in.) For more information, like the route map I enjoyed making, where to watch online, and lower Manhattan being car-free (like the Carroll Street Bridge!), go to bkcb6.app/knicks.
If, like me, even before they stopped letting people into the parade, it seemed like a case of “nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded,” while still wanting to be part of what theologian Michael Novak called our “civil religion,” I’d suggest voting this morning and getting a Knicks-themed “I Voted” sticker.
Citywide, early voting is running at about 40% of last year’s primary pace. In CB6, we’re running at roughly 49% of where we were at this same point in last year’s primary. So while CB6 is, in turnout terms, outperforming the city as a whole, we’re still only at about half of last year’s turnout. Including today, there are five days left to vote: four days of early voting and Primary Election Day on Tuesday, June 23. If that dual attempt to inspire and guilt one into participating in democracy worked, but you’re wondering where to do so, head to bkcb6.app/poll-finder-bk.
I’ll stop here and suggest you scroll down and read the rest of this email. You’ll find there are lots of things to do as we face Knickless nights ahead.
P.S. A championship, especially since there have only been two between the Knicks and Rangers since the exemption was granted in 1982, doesn’t offset the fact that Madison Square Garden shouldn’t be exempt from property taxes. I’ve ranted about this for years, and so I figured I’d mention it today.
