Transportation & Public Safety ยท Committee approved Mar 18
Move Traffic & Parking Enforcement from NYPD to NYC DOT
CB6's Transportation & Public Safety Committee unanimously passed this resolution on March 18. It calls on elected officials to transfer parking and traffic enforcement back to DOT โ€” where it operated until Mayor Giuliani moved it to the NYPD in 1996. Parking & vehicle complaints are the single largest 311 complaint category in CB6. Covered by Streetsblog โ†—

Until 1996, traffic enforcement agents operated under the DOT โ€” keeping parking enforcement separate from police functions. The resolution argues that returning it to DOT would allow traffic agents to operate independently of precinct culture, where illegal parking by officers and placard holders is routinely overlooked. Parking complaints are by far CB6's top 311 category, and the district needs assessment identifies traffic enforcement as a top concern. The resolution doesn't specify the exact mechanism โ€” it asks elected officials to find the best path forward.
