A zone is the school your address has a right to apply to first. It is not a guarantee of a seat, and it is not the only school you can apply to. Elementary zones cover most of the city. Middle school varies: some districts zone you to one school, others are choice districts where families rank schools instead. High school is mostly citywide choice, so most addresses return no zoned high school at all. Where that is the case, the result says so and gives the enrollment phone number published with the zone.

Boundaries are the NYC Department of Education 2024-2025 school zones: 770 elementary, 279 middle and 80 high school zones. School names, addresses, grade spans and phone numbers are joined by DBN to the DOE school location directory published on NYC Open Data. 799 of 812 elementary, 275 of 279 middle and 32 of 32 high school code references matched a directory record; the remainder are shown by their DBN code with a note, because those schools opened after the directory snapshot. 30 elementary, 36 middle and 48 high school areas carry no zoned school at all, mostly parks, cemeteries, airports, and choice districts where families apply rather than being zoned.

Being zoned for a school is not the same as being placed in it. Most high schools admit citywide rather than by zone, which is why 48 of the 80 high school areas are marked as citywide choice. Always confirm with the school or your enrollment office.
