Again, we begin with Gowanus and Monday night’s EWCDH meeting and the Public Place/Gowanus Green presentation that was given during the meeting by the Department of City Planning (DCP), Housing, Preservation & Development(HPD) and Gowanus Green .

There’s been coverage of the meeting that mentioned our position on affordability, but it’s important to reiterate that Brooklyn Community Board 6 is on the record in support of 100 percent affordable housing on city-owned Gowanus sites . Although it hasn’t been mentioned in any coverage to date, the Gowanus Green development team noted that a 100% affordable project would result in less height and less density.

Let’s be clear that the future of this site, and across Gowanus, is contingent on it being properly cleaned and then monitored. We are fortunate to have EPA region 2 oversight adding an additional layer of scrutiny.

At the meeting, we announced that additional questions and comments are welcomed by the board and that they should be sent via email . The comments we receive will then be directed to DCP, HPD, and the Gowanus Green team.

While Monday’s meeting focused on housing, we aren't for one second losing sight of protections for the Industrial Business Zone (IBZ), substantial monetary infusions for improvements to NYCHA campuses, as well as many other concerns that must be dealt with in the pending rezoning of Gowanus.

Moving to the more immediate future, as usual, our community is busy tonight, Wednesday, December 4th . At Pioneer Works , starting at 6:30 PM, the Theatre of the Oppressed will be performing a piece about gentrification in Red Hook and at 7:30 PM the 76 th Precinct Community Counci l, chaired by our very own Jerry Armer, holds its monthly meeting at the station house.

Tomorrow Thursday, December 5th , from 2:30- 3:30 PM City Comptroller Stringer holds a Senior Town Hall at NYP Brooklyn Methodist . While tomorrow evening will see merchants along Smith & Court Streets celebrating the holidays with extended house hours and free samples , Pig Beach hosts a tree lighting party in Gowanus , and the Park Slope Civic Council meets and celebrates at the Old Stone House !

Lastly, for the last time this year and decade, our next General Board Meeting is a week from today on Wednesday, December 11th , 6:30 PM at the Cobble Hill Health Center .
