I’d like to begin by wishing all who celebrate a Happy Ramadan, and I hope that everyone had a good Earth Day and that this email finds you well.

In stark contrast to just a few weeks ago, regarding COVID-19, there is a real trend of fewer hospitalizations, intubations, a “flattening” in reported cases and, fewer deaths. We’ve also learned that COVID-19 was in our midst earlier and at much higher numbers than initially thought. This clear deceleration shows that current strategies are working and gives reason to remaining rigorous in continuing to “ pause .”

Conversely to the deceleration in cases, there is an acceleration in negative economic impact and suffering caused by COVID-19. Some are profiting, and even a few are profiteering during this, but they are the exceptions that prove the rule. As highlighted in a report from The New School that I shared last week, if we don’t fight the economic inequality laid bare by COVID-19, we’re going to see unwarranted suffering and hardship, locally and globally , as untreated complications of the pandemic.  

Policies for how we deal with the crisis, in terms of health and economics, will certainly be discussed at our May 6th virtual “check-in.”  As noted, the purpose of the “check-in” is to keep the community informed and answer questions as clearly as possible. One way to do that is to submit questions here so that government agencies and officials that take part in the check-in will be able to provide the best information available. Thank you to everyone who has submitted questions and to the 50 or so people that have registered for the event.
