In the week since that requirement was put into place, the positive news of a downward trend in COVID -19 infections and fatalities continued . Nonetheless, stats moving in the right direction don’t give us an excuse to ease up on the restrictions, nor do they allow us to discount any of the pain and suffering our fellow New Yorkers are experiencing.

“Good” COVID-19 stats also fail to speak to the mounting evidence that we are accelerating down a steep road of economic decline . I wish links I’ve been including for unemployment insurance weren’t among the most clicked on. However, that being the realty should serve to remind us why we, just like before this crisis began, we need policies to reduce such widespread pain and suffering. There a lot of ideas and possibilities for how to do that. Even if I were smart enough, I couldn’t cover them all in a single newsletter. 

We’ve been emphasizing , long before this crisis , that we can’t forget how important our city’s Industrial and manufacturing capabilitie s are. Not only in the interest of the small businesses themselves , but in the interest of community cohesion, we need to keep them operating after this crisis is over . No one doubts that we must keep people in their homes and continue, especially having just celebrated Earth Day, to do so in environmentally smart ways .
