If you read this newsletter or have met me, you know I love all things voting; the act of voting itself, reminding people to vote and registering folks to vote. Some may recall that pre-pandemic I’d tell people that if they saw me out and about, or at a CB6 meeting, to ask me for a voter registration form if they needed one. Well, in the rare good sign of the times, the NY State Senate has passed a bill that will allow online voting registration in NYC. This doesn’t stop anyone from registering by mail, at the DMV or dropping that registration form at the Board of Elections , but what it does do is add one more way, faster than the other options, for people to have their voice heard and participate in democracy.

Our census has always at least attempted to count everyone living in our country, but now arbitrarily and by dictate our xenophobic head of state just decided to use the 2020 census to reduce future services for places like NYC. Aside from being illegal, it’s just plain wrong as the census doesn’t exist to count every person of certain types. It exists to count every person in the country. It now becomes even more important that we fill out the census and make sure to support the work of CB6’s own Jason Reischel and others to make every New Yorker Count, Speaking of filling out the census, in less than 10 minutes, y ou can do it here .  

Last but not least don’t forget that tomorrow, Thursday July 23rd, beginning at 7 PM, we are co-sponsoring a “ back to school” town hall with Councilmember Brad Lander. The town hall will feature leadership from the Department of Education, including Deputy Chancellor Adrienne Austin, Executive Superintendent Karen Watts, and District 15 Superintendent Anita Skop.
