On Wednesday, October 21st, our Parks Committee meets at 6:30 PM, and our Landmarks/Land Use Committee is meeting on Thursday, October 22nd, at 6:00 PM. The Landmarks/Land Use meeting has received some coverage due to the agenda, including a presentation from the Department of City Planning (DCP). That presentation will outline their timeline in advance of the Gowanus rezoning being certified (the first stage of the ULURP) in January 2021. Thank you to everyone who has submitted questions in advance of Thursday’s meeting, and if anyone else wants to, we now have a portal to do so right here.

Before going any further, I want to congratulate the NYC Census 2020 team, including CB6 member Jason Reischel, despite every roadblock imaginable, for matching the 2010 Census self-response rate of 61%. Roadblocks such as a hostile federal government looking to intimidate immigrants into not getting counted, and legal challenges ended up cutting the count short. On top of that, it took place when we in NYC were the epicenter of the pandemic. Even with limited door to door outreach, the NYC Census team still managed to beat the census bureau’s expectations by almost 4 points and did better than cities such as LA, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Dallas, and Houston. 

I’d take this example as a reminder of why civic participation is so meaningful and never stops. With that, I’ll recommend reading some civic stuff below, such as the Gowanus ArtWalk, and hope that you enjoy the rest of your Monday.
