I hope this email finds you well on this very hot Friday, the 13th. Hopefully, Saturday the 14th and other upcoming days will be less hot than it currently is and has been. Due to that heat, I’ve been using my air conditioner, but note that cooling centers remain open.

However, I did face the heat directly at the Gowanus Houses earlier today to stand with Borough President Adams, Councilman Lander, Gowanus Tenant Association President Ed Tyree, and the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice(GNCJ). The purpose of this was Borough President Adams’s announcement of conditional support for the Gowanus Rezoning. The conditions are strong and similar to our own, especially NYCHA, and can be read here.

As the board has made clear for years, these conditions were and remained deal-breakers. So it’s encouraging to see that there is a shared commitment to them in addition to our advisory voice in what is likely to be the incoming Mayoral administration. That commitment includes both the Borough President and Councilmember Lander, who made it clear that our conditions are his conditions as well.
