Soon after calling the meeting to order, we heard from State Senator Jabari Brisport. Senator Brisport took advantage of the technical tools of the virtual format with a brief slide presentation on the state budget process, funding options, the open meeting law, and redistricting. Unfortunately, part of redistricting is that beginning January 2023, Jabari’s 25th senate district will no longer overlap with our community district. 

Following the Senator’s slides, we approved the minutes from our January meeting and moved on to three items for a vote. Two were liquor license applications to the Staten Liquor Authority (SLA) from our Permits & Licenses (P&L) committee. The first was for a fusion and fried chicken restaurant at 244 Flatbush Avenue, and the second was for a Italian restaurant at 272 3rd Avenue. Both license requests were unanimously approved and now move on to the SLA.

Before moving on to the third voting item, we were joined by Council Member Lincoln Restler with updates on what he’s been doing in his first month and a half representing the 33rd district. Lincoln told us he and the entire Brooklyn council delegation are opposing huge ConEd rate hikes. He spoke about local hiring at Wyckoff and mentioned that on February 23rd, he’s hosting a panel discussion titled Community Board 101 (CB 101), explaining what community boards can do and why folks should apply to become members. I’m a panelist at CB101, so I concede a bias, but I think that will be a great event for anyone interested in applying to be part of their community board. 

The third voting item was from the Landmarks portion of our Landmarks/Land Use Committee. That item was for a Certificate of Appropriateness(C of A) from the Landmarks Preservation Commission(LPC) to restore the front facade and stoop, install a new roof deck at the middle section of the roof, and a two-story rear yard extension with a roof deck and a glazed rear opening at 205 Clinton Street in the Cobble Hill Historic District. It was approved on the condition that the applicant considers mitigation of visibility of the rooftop components (railings, deck, and chimneys). During the discussion of this item, there was some surprise when folks learned that neighboring 205 Clinton Street was a Gun Club, the Metropolitan Rod & Gun Club at 162 Pacific Street.

Closing out the meeting, we heard from the offices of Congresswoman Velasquez, Senator Kavanagh, Assembly Members Carroll, Simon, and Council Member Hanif.
