The sun’s already set as we begin a weekend with a potential for frost. If one enjoys the cold, our community has plenty to offer outside. That includes a potluck harvest in Cobble Hill, bulb planting in Red Hook, sludge stories in Gowanus, Mozart in Park Slope, and more.
If one prefers to be a spectator of the cold, you can stay inside and avail yourself of 2 applications. One application, which will be open until November 30th, is for the Gowanus Oversight Task Force. To apply, go to bit.ly/gowanustaskforceapplication. The other application is for all 18 Brooklyn Community Boards (CB). To apply, go to bit.ly/bkcbapplications2023. The applications will be open until Valentine’s Day 2023 for those who love their communities.
Even if you receive emails from a CB, you may wonder what CBs do and what our role is or can be in city government. A recent op-ed from Brooklyn Borough President (BP) Reynoso articulated an excellent explanation of our role. He discussed how CB advisory power could determine the outcome of things we review, such as land use applications. The BP used one prime example to demonstrate this point: us at CB6 and our work on the Gowanus rezoning. The BP wrote that “Because of Community Board 6’s advocacy,” the “Gowanus Houses and Wyckoff Gardens Houses will see about $200 million in renovations, and the rezoning was the first to have an independent racial impact study, showing that it would increase income and racial diversity in the community.”.
On that note, I’ll stop, but you should keep reading and scrolling down this email. No matter what you do, have a great weekend.
