Hopefully, your weekend’s going well thus far. It follows a week that saw a big announcement for Red Hook and a forward-thinking discussion on 4th Avenue.

The Red Hook announcement was a land swap with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that will give the NYC government control of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The stated mixed-use goals(reducing truck traffic, housing, retail, green space, and a modern port) are a step in the right direction, and hopefully, that will remain the case as details and the process are made clearer. 

The discussion I referred to the discussion on 4th Avenue was a meeting held by Forth on Fourth Ave (FOFA) on Wednesday night at the Old Stone House. It was a great discussion on what the community wants on 4th Avenue and what’s happening regarding traffic safety, flooding, and design. SJ Avery and Grace Freedman did a great job organizing the meeting and conducting the community survey, which informed much of the discussion. The discussion included Council Members Hanif and Aviles, DDC, DSNY DEP, CB6 ( represented by myself and our transportation chair, Doug Gordon), GCC, and many others. Improving 4th Avenue is certainly an ongoing conversation, so there will be more opportunities to discuss. In keeping with the theme of community meetings, please keep in mind that this Thursday, May 23rd, we have a Landmarks/ Land Use committee meeting that includes the City of Yes Housing Opportunity. It’ll be in person at the Van Alen Institute and virtually via Zoom.
