Next Tuesday, November 18th, EDC and the Mayor's Office of Environmental Coordination will join a CB6 Committee meeting at the Red Hook Community Justice Center. The focus will be on the Brooklyn Marine Terminal Environmental Impact Statement. I mention more towards the end, so this could serve as a hook to read what's in between and before i go further, thank you to any veterans reading this.

I'd like to reiterate my congratulations to our incoming Mayor, Zohran Mamdani on being elected our 111th Mayor, as well as to Borough President Reynoso, Council Member Avile, and Council Members Shahana Hanif on their reelections, and to former CB6 member and Land Use Chair Alec Schierenbeck on his work as the executive director of the Charter Revision Commission and the passage of ballot questions 2 through 5.

Some may know I taught political science for years at Brooklyn College. With all the election talk and analysis, I noticed a vacuum that, even if nature abhors it, wasn’t likely to be filled, and that was a breakdown by-community board district. I examined the only items on our ballot that could be deemed competitive or contested, and those were the mayoral race and the three ballot measures, numbered 2 through 4. If you don't recall, in a simplified sense, if approved, Question 2 would create a process to fast-track affordable housing applications, Question 3 would simplify the review process for modest housing proposals, and Question 4 would establish an Affordable Housing Appeals Board.

I’m working on a citywide breakdown, but for now, we’ll stick with the district we know and love, Brooklyn Community Board 6. So, I’ll share what I've got, Zohran Mamdani, as I think most would expect. CB6 overwhelmingly voted for Zohran Mamdani, with 75% of the vote, compared to Andrew Cuomo’s 22% and Curtis Sliwa’s 2%. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the ballot measures, as many people spoke out against them. However, in the end, questions 2 through 4 were approved in CB6, with an average approval rate of 65% to 35%. Specifically, question 2 received 66% approval, while questions 3 and 4 received 65% and 62% approval, respectively. As I love to see, we outpaced the borough and city, which also approved them, and it's a good reminder to have some perspective and that the straw poll one takes just by living may not be reflective of any sort if majority.

The other ballot measures all passed CB6, even the one that failed in the city, one which would’ve had mayoral elections in presidential election years. Personally, I voted for question 6 (and the rest). Still, it’s hard to argue against more turnout when the Mayor-elect and these ballot measures, as individual items, received more votes than any other mayor this century. I’m very encouraged that, like the district, he voted to support these measures that help build housing, which will hopefully be a big part of easing the affordability and housing crisis. Even Jacobin, hardly a supporter of Milton Friedman, endorsed these ballot measures, saying that You Can't Have Social Housing Without Building Housing.
