I assume you know that public school buildings remain closed and in-person learning has been delayed for at least 11 days. School openings now are to start on September 21st. A lot of people are not pleased with, what is again, a plan that seems to be made, and adjusted on the fly. Still, at least it was an acknowledgment that we don’t have to rush 1.1 million children back into schools with unnecessary risk and a guaranteed spike in virus cases. I’ve noticed, as a way to counter such caution, some people are claiming that only 6 percent of the over 180,000 COVID-19 deaths are death attributable to the virus and thus an acceptable fact of life. If it’s not dishonest it is, at best, void of empathy.

We have a lot of stuff happening around the district, like spraying for mosquitoes and more that you can check out by reading past my email signature. But before doing that, I’ll remind you that a school delay doesn’t mean anything if the necessary safety improvements aren’t made. So, if you have thoughts on this, regardless of what they are, or if you want to make sure literacy teachers aren’t roving substitutes, feel free to submit testimony in advance of tomorrow’s city council education committee.
