We all have solemn remembrances of that which was lost in life and innocence on this the 19th anniversary of the September 11th attacks that brought down the twin towers, scarred the Pentagon, and brought down a jet full of men, women, and children. I, the CB6 staff, and all of our members offer our deepest condolences and sympathy for those lost lives and to their loved ones who grieve that loss from that Tuesday in 2001.

Unfortunately, I have to share the sad news of Salvatore "Buddy" Scotto’s passing. A larger than life neighborhood leader and unofficial Mayor of Carroll Gardens who could never be ignored. At a time when many were leaving Brooklyn, including our cherished “South Brooklyn,” he stayed and started civic, neighborhood, and political organizations that exist to this day. Once upon a time, he was even a community board member.

He will be honored and remembered by people with far more stature than me, but I’m proud to have known him. There are many reading this message right now that I would’ve never met had it not been for Buddy. I offer my deepest condolences to his family, including his daughter CB6 member Debra Scotto.

Moving to last night’s Landmark/ Land Use meeting, which dealt with a topic that was always on Buddy's mind - that being the remediation and development of the Gowanus Canal. As advertised, our Landmark/ Land Use meeting, featured a presentation from Gowanus Lands on a park proposal to replace the current proposal for affordable housing, a park, and a school for the city-owned site commonly referred to as “public place.” Buddy told us of his involvement in getting that designation to keep the land from being alienated. You can watch the meeting here on YouTube and see the presentation slides here. I'd like to offer a big thank you to Mac Thayer for making the presentation and all the work that went into it.

We had an excellent turnout and are in the process of upgrading to be able to accommodate more folks at upcoming meetings. I should have a definite announcement this coming Monday.

As always, as we head into the weekend and keep our distance, there are lots of things happening in our community that you can check out below my signature. But before you do that, I’d recommend taking note of the fact people at 16 separate city schools have tested positive for COVID -19. Tracing is taking place to, hopefully, limit the spread.
