First, Covid hospitalizations in NYC have surpassed 5k for the first time since the spring of 2020. This is straining the city’s healthcare and 911 systems. With that in mind, I was able to speak with FDNY Assistant Commissioner Jason Shelly. He explained that FDNY asks people to only call 911 for true emergencies. However, mild Covid symptoms are not such an emergency. Also, ambulances do not provide testing for COVID-19, and patients are not transported to a hospital to be tested upon request. Of course, this highlights a need for at-home tests to be made readily available. But I digress and remind you to click here for Covid testing locations and the best way to avoid needing Covid services; getting vaccinated and being boosted!

Secondly, while we’re in the first days of a term for New York City Mayor, Comptroller, and Council, those representing New York in the state and federal legislatures next year are TBD. It’s not just TBD who will run but in what districts because the legislative lines for next year are still being determined. The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission met Monday to approve a set of newly-drawn maps that would shape the boundaries for state and federal elections for the next ten years. You can see those maps here, but there are still many possibilities before this process is done in February.
